What is circumcision?

Circumcision is a surgical procedure getting rid of the foreskin – skin covering the tip of the penis, to help expose the penis more thoroughly. This procedure helps eliminate accumulated substances in this area and lowers the risk of infection.

Generally, circumcision brings no harm to people’s health. After the procedure, they can recover fast if follow post-surgery instructions closely and there are no risk factors.

When should young males and adults get circumcised?

As stated above, circumcision is to remove the hood of skin on the tip of the male genitalia. The foreskin does have its function, to keep the glans (tip of the penis) clean and moisturized, and also contributes to protecting the glans. That’s why, in some cases, if there is no serious issue related to it, doctors recommend just leaving it.

If abnormalities are happening with the foreskin, surgical intervention needs to be done to help the penis back to a healthy and functional state.

The most common reasons that lead to circumcision include excessive foreskin, phimosis, paraphimosis, and balanitis.

  • Excessive foreskin is when the foreskin is too long, covers the tip of the penis, is hard to be pulled back completely, and can not expose the tip even with an erection.
  • Phimosis is the inability to pull back the foreskin due to it being too tight, leading to pain and urinary problems.
  • Paraphimosis occurs when the foreskin becomes stuck completely behind the head of the penis, can not be pulled back and restricts blood flow to the end of the penis.
  • Balanitis is a pain and inflammation state of the tip of the penis.

These conditions above can turn into more serious problems if not treated on time and properly. The best solution is to perform circumcision and follow the instructions of doctors.

Sometimes male adults choose to do circumcision because it causes discomfort during their daily lives, especially their sex life.

Advantages of circumcision

When circumcision is applied, it’s proved that the current state of the foreskin is causing inconvenience to daily lives and need medical intervention.

Benefit of Circumcision

Notable benefits of circumcision include:

  • Easier hygiene. Circumcision gets rid of the excess skin, eliminates all bacteria and dirty substances accumulated in the head of the penis, and makes it simpler to wash the penis.
  • Decreased risk of infections. The male genital is kept clean and dry, lowering the risk of any infection.
  • Increase future life quality. There is no relation between sexual drive and circumcision. Instead, not being circumcised may lead to many conditions that affect sex life.
  • Decrease the risk of infertility and cancer. Uncircumcision may result in some diseases of the foreskin that can eventually lead to necrosis, cancer, or infertility.
  • Decrease the risk of HIV. Circumcision can help lower the risk of sexually transmitted diseases, including HIV.

Potential complications of circumcision

As commonly operated and simple as this procedure is, like any other surgery, minor or major, there are some potential risks:

  • Bleeding, which is usually just a small amount.
  • Infection, which is usually mild and easy to treat
  • Reaction to anesthesia
  • Pain
  • More skin or less skin removed than planned
  • Overstimulated glans
  • Scar tissue forming
  • Inflammation.

In some rare cases, the foreskin doesn’t heal properly and sticks to the head of the penis (adhesion) and needs medical intervasion.

A standard procedure will be carried out in this order:

-Step 1: Clinical examination.

The doctor will check the actual condition of the male genitalia for any acute infection. If there is, it has to be treated first before the actual operation.

-Step 2:

Clean the penis and foreskin with antiseptic.

Use medication to numb the surrounding veins.

Clean the inside of the foreskin and glans.

Mark the area that will be circumcised.

Perform surgery and then use medical thread to suture the wound.

-Step 3: The patient will then be moved to an intensive care unit to monitor the post-surgery condition. After making sure their health is stable, the doctor will provide prescriptions and instructions for personal care and hygiene at home. There is also a check-up schedule to monitor the healing process.

Post-operation care

The recovery time takes about 8 to 10 days. During the healing period, the penis may look swollen and red.

You’ll need to:

  • Rest well
  • Clean the genital at least 2 times a day with saline and solution prescribed by the doctor to keep the wound clean and help it heal faster.
  • Wear baggy, comfortable pants
  • Avoid intercourse for at least 2-3 months
  • Take medication as prescribed
  • Contact your doctor if there are any abnormalities.
